# Semaglutide: Uses, Forms and Safety in India Semaglutide is a prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist. Depending on the exact authorised product, it may be used for type 2 diabetes, chronic weight management or another approved indication. Brand name, formulation, strength, dosing schedule and approved use must be checked together; products containing the same molecule are not automatically interchangeable. ## How semaglutide works Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors. It supports glucose-dependent insulin secretion, reduces glucagon when glucose is elevated, can slow gastric emptying and can reduce appetite and food intake. These effects can improve glucose control and support weight reduction for an appropriate indication. Glucose-dependent action lowers—but does not remove—the possibility of hypoglycaemia. Risk is higher when semaglutide is combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea, or when food intake changes substantially. ## Injectable and oral forms are different products Semaglutide is available in injectable and oral formulations in some markets. Instructions about timing, administration, missed doses, dose escalation, storage and approved indication are product-specific. Do not copy a dose or schedule from a different brand, formulation or country. ## India context CDSCO publishes approval records for new drugs in India. Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms can cause dehydration and kidney injury. Product information also includes important warnings or precautions involving gallbladder disease, pancreatitis symptoms, diabetic retinopathy in some people, severe gastrointestinal problems, hypoglycaemia with certain other medicines and procedures involving anaesthesia or deep sedation. Thyroid-tumour warnings and contraindications must be read from the exact product information. A general article should not turn one formulation's label into a class-wide eligibility decision. ## Pregnancy and breastfeeding Weight-management use is not recommended during pregnancy. Planned pregnancy, suspected pregnancy or breastfeeding needs prompt product-specific review. Lactation wording can differ between oral and injectable semaglutide products, so do not apply one label to another. ## When to seek help Seek urgent care for severe continuing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, fainting, breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, severe hypoglycaemia, sudden vision change or another medical emergency.
