# Green tea and GLP-1: is there a link?

**Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1)** is a hormone the gut releases after eating. - **Supporting the gut microbiome.** Catechins act as prebiotics for certain beneficial gut bacteria. A healthier microbiome composition is associated with better incretin hormone signaling, including GLP-1.

These mechanisms are plausible and supported by early-stage research. The overall effect of green tea on circulating GLP-1 levels in humans is modest and is not comparable to the sustained, pharmacological GLP-1 receptor activation produced by prescription therapy.

- Green tea does not directly activate GLP-1 receptors.
- Green tea does not replicate the hormonal pathway that medications like semaglutide use.
- No dietary supplement or beverage currently has evidence showing it can reproduce the pharmacological effects or clinical outcomes of prescription GLP-1 receptor agonists.
- Modern GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GIP/GLP-1 therapies demonstrate double-digit percentage weight loss in clinical trials. Green tea, even consumed regularly, does not produce outcomes of that magnitude.
