# Visceral Fat: Meaning and Metabolic Health Relevance Visceral fat is fat stored inside the abdomen around internal organs. It differs from subcutaneous fat stored beneath the skin and is associated with cardiometabolic risk. A waist measurement can suggest abdominal fat distribution but does not directly measure visceral fat. ## In simple terms Body fat has different locations and functions. Visceral fat lies deeper in the abdomen, while subcutaneous fat is closer to the skin. Imaging can estimate these compartments more directly, but it is not routinely needed for everyone. [Abdominal obesity](/glossary/abdominal-obesity), [central obesity](/glossary/central-obesity), waist circumference and visceral fat are related concepts, not exact synonyms. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health Higher visceral fat is associated with insulin resistance, abnormal lipids and other metabolic risks. Changes in weight or waist can support assessment, but they do not prove how much visceral fat changed or determine eligibility for medication. ## India-specific context South Asian populations may develop metabolic risk at lower BMI and waist measurements than some other populations. Clinicians should interpret body measurements with Indian or South Asian guidance and the person's wider risk profile. ## When to speak with a doctor Do not use consumer scales or online calculators as a diagnosis. Discuss increasing waist size or abnormal glucose, blood pressure or lipid results with a clinician. Sudden abdominal swelling or severe pain needs prompt assessment. ## FAQs ### Is visceral fat the same as belly fat? Not exactly. Belly fat can include both visceral fat and subcutaneous fat. ### Can a tape measure directly measure visceral fat? No. Waist circumference is an indirect screening measure. ### Does lower body weight always mean less visceral fat? Not necessarily in a predictable amount; body-composition changes vary. ## Related glossary terms - [Abdominal obesity](/glossary/abdominal-obesity) - [Central obesity](/glossary/central-obesity) - [Obesity](/glossary/obesity) - [Lipid profile](/glossary/lipid-profile) - [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c) ## References - [NIDDK: Factors affecting weight and health](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management/adult-overweight-obesity/factors-affecting-weight-health) - [WHO: Obesity and overweight](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/obesity-and-overweight) *Educational information only.
