# Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio (UACR): Kidney Test Explained

Urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) compares albumin with creatinine in a spot urine sample. The ratio helps adjust for urine concentration and can detect albumin leakage, an early sign of kidney damage.

## In simple terms
Healthy kidneys usually keep most albumin in the blood. Damaged filters may allow albumin into urine. UACR is different from serum creatinine and eGFR: UACR looks for kidney damage, while eGFR estimates filtration. Both can be informative.

Exercise, fever, infection, menstruation, marked hyperglycaemia and other temporary factors can affect a sample. An abnormal result may need confirmation.

## Why it matters during GLP-1 care
Diabetes and high blood pressure are common kidney-risk factors. UACR monitoring can guide kidney and cardiovascular risk management, but it is not a test of how much weight a GLP-1 medicine has caused someone to lose.

## India context
Use the units and reference categories on the laboratory report. A first-morning sample may be preferred, but a random spot sample can also be used. Follow the clinician's collection and repeat-testing instructions.

## When to contact a doctor
Promptly seek care for very low urine output, severe swelling, breathlessness, confusion, blood in urine or severe illness with dehydration. Do not change diabetes or blood-pressure medicine from one urine result.

## FAQs
### Is UACR the same as a urine dipstick?
No. UACR quantifies albumin relative to creatinine and is more suitable for detecting and monitoring albuminuria.

### Does one abnormal result diagnose chronic kidney disease?
Not always. Persistence and clinical context matter.

### Why check eGFR too?
Kidney damage and filtration are different dimensions, so one may be abnormal while the other is not.
