# Thyroid Function Tests: TSH, T4 and Result Context Thyroid function tests are blood tests used to assess thyroid activity. TSH is commonly checked first, with free or total T4 and sometimes T3 or thyroid antibodies added according to the clinical question. ## In simple terms The pituitary gland releases TSH to signal the thyroid. A high or low TSH can suggest a thyroid problem, but interpretation depends on T4, symptoms, pregnancy, medicines, illness and the laboratory range. A thyroid function test does not screen for every thyroid nodule or cancer. It is also different from the product-specific thyroid warnings associated with some medicines. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health Thyroid disease can affect weight, heart rate, energy and bowel habits, so clinicians may test when symptoms or history suggest it. Testing is not proof that weight change has a thyroid cause and is not a universal measure of GLP-1 response. ## India-specific context Use an accredited laboratory and interpret results with the reference range printed on that report. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, thyroid medicine, biotin supplements and recent illness because these can affect testing or interpretation. ## When to speak with a doctor Seek prompt care for severe palpitations, chest pain, fainting, marked confusion or breathing difficulty. Do not start, stop or adjust thyroid medicine or GLP-1 treatment from a laboratory result without the treating clinician. ## FAQs ### Is TSH the only thyroid test? No. It is often first, but T4, T3 or antibodies may be needed. ### Does a normal TSH rule out every thyroid problem? No. The clinical question and other findings matter. ### Is this test for medullary thyroid cancer? No. Routine TSH and T4 tests do not diagnose that cancer. ## Related glossary terms - [TSH test](/glossary#tsh-test) - [Kidney function test](/glossary/kidney-function-test-kft) - [eGFR test](/glossary/egfr-test) - [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist) - [Obesity](/glossary/obesity) ## References - [NIDDK: Thyroid tests](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/-/media/Files/Diagnostic-Tests/thyroidtests_508.pdf) *Educational information only.
