# Serum Creatinine: Test Meaning and Kidney Context

Serum creatinine is the concentration of creatinine in the liquid part of blood. Creatinine comes from normal muscle metabolism and is cleared mainly by the kidneys. Clinicians use it with other information to estimate kidney filtration, but one value is not a complete measure of kidney health.

## In simple terms
A laboratory uses serum creatinine with factors such as age and sex to calculate eGFR. When kidney filtration falls, creatinine often rises, but muscle mass, diet, supplements, medicines, acute illness and hydration can influence the result.

A [kidney function test](/glossary/kidney-function-test-kft) may include creatinine and eGFR. Urine albumin testing provides different information about kidney damage.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
Diabetes can affect kidney health. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea during treatment can cause [dehydration](/glossary/dehydration) and change kidney results. The clinician may review kidney function when choosing or monitoring medicines.

## India-specific context
Indian laboratories commonly report creatinine in mg/dL. Reference intervals can differ by method and laboratory, so compare the value with the stated range, eGFR, previous results and clinical context.

## When to speak with a doctor
Seek prompt care for very low urine output, severe dehydration, swelling with breathlessness, confusion or rapidly worsening illness. Do not stop or change a medicine based only on an online interpretation.

## FAQs
### Is a high creatinine always chronic kidney disease?
No. Acute illness, dehydration and other factors can change it; trends and additional tests matter.

### Is creatinine the same as eGFR?
No. Creatinine is measured; eGFR is calculated from it and other information.

### Can muscle mass affect creatinine?
Yes. Muscle mass is one reason the result needs individual interpretation.
