# Sarcopenia: Muscle Strength, Mass and Physical Function Sarcopenia is a muscle disorder involving low muscle strength and reduced muscle quantity or quality. Poor physical performance can indicate more severe disease. It is more common with ageing but can also occur earlier with illness, inactivity, undernutrition or major weight loss. ## In simple terms A low muscle-mass estimate alone does not establish sarcopenia. Clinical frameworks combine measures such as grip strength or chair-rise performance with muscle assessment by DEXA or another accepted method. Cut-offs depend on the framework and population being used. ## Why it matters during GLP-1 care During intentional weight loss, clinicians may follow strength, function, dietary adequacy and body composition rather than weight alone. Resistance exercise and adequate nutrition are important, but the plan must account for age, kidney function, injuries, frailty and current intake. ## India context Ask which diagnostic framework and reference cut-offs are being used. Asian consensus criteria may be more relevant than copying a device's generic classification. Gym-scale estimates cannot diagnose sarcopenia. ## When to contact a doctor Arrange clinical review for new difficulty rising from a chair, repeated falls, marked weakness, rapid unintended weight loss or inability to meet food needs. Sudden one-sided weakness or speech difficulty is an emergency and is not explained by sarcopenia. ## FAQs ### Is sarcopenia just loss of muscle mass? No. Strength is central, and diagnosis also considers muscle quantity or quality and physical performance. ### Can a young adult develop it? Yes, particularly with serious illness, prolonged inactivity or undernutrition, although it is more common in older adults. ### Can BIA diagnose it by itself? No. BIA is an estimate and must be interpreted within a recognised clinical assessment. ## Related glossary terms - [Muscle preservation](/glossary/muscle-preservation) - [Lean body mass](/glossary/lean-body-mass) - [Resistance training](/glossary/resistance-training) - [Protein](/glossary/protein) - [Sarcopenic obesity](/glossary#sarcopenic-obesity) ## References - [Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia: 2019 consensus](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32033882/) - [European Working Group: Revised sarcopenia consensus](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30312372/) *Educational information only.
