# Pregnancy and GLP-1 Medicines: Planning and Urgent Next Steps

Pregnancy is the period from implantation until birth. Medicine decisions during pregnancy must consider both the pregnant person and the developing baby. GLP-1 medicines used for weight management are not recommended for pregnant women in current WHO guidance.

## In simple terms
Pregnancy changes glucose, nutrition, digestion and medicine needs. Intentional weight-loss treatment is not managed in the same way during pregnancy. Safety information and recommended stopping intervals can differ by medicine because products have different persistence and labels.

A missed period, positive test or pregnancy symptoms need prompt clinical discussion rather than internet-based dose decisions.

## Why it matters during GLP-1 care
WHO excludes pregnant women from its recommendation for GLP-1 therapy for obesity because these medicines have not been adequately tested in this population. Anyone planning pregnancy should discuss the exact medicine and product-specific stopping interval in advance.

## India context
Contact the prescribing clinician and obstetric-care team promptly if pregnancy is planned or suspected. Bring the medicine name, strength, last dose date and other medicines. Use a qualified prescriber and the current Indian product information.

## When to contact a doctor
Seek urgent obstetric care for heavy bleeding, severe one-sided or abdominal pain, fainting, severe vomiting with dehydration, chest pain, breathing difficulty or other emergency symptoms. Do not restart treatment after pregnancy or while breastfeeding without product-specific medical advice.

## FAQs
### Are GLP-1 medicines recommended for weight loss during pregnancy?
No. Current WHO obesity guidance excludes pregnant women.

### What if I become pregnant while taking one?
Contact the prescriber and obstetric clinician promptly with the exact product and last dose.

### Is the stopping interval the same for every medicine?
No. It is product-specific and must follow current prescribing information.
