# Postprandial Glucose: Understanding Blood Sugar After Meals

Postprandial glucose is the blood glucose level after eating. It describes the rise and fall that follows a meal rather than a fasting value. The timing of a test matters because a result taken one hour after eating is not directly comparable with one taken two or three hours later.

## In simple terms
Carbohydrate-containing foods are broken down into glucose. The pancreas responds by releasing insulin, which helps glucose move from blood into cells. Meal size, carbohydrate type, physical activity, stress, illness and diabetes medicines can all influence the pattern.

A single home-meter reading can help explain symptoms or a meal response, but it does not diagnose diabetes by itself. Diagnostic tests use defined preparation, timing and laboratory methods.

## Why it matters during GLP-1 care
GLP-1 receptor agonists can support glucose-dependent insulin release, reduce glucagon secretion and slow digestion. These effects may reduce after-meal glucose excursions. The result should still be interpreted with fasting glucose, HbA1c, symptoms and any medicines that can cause low glucose.

## India context
Indian meals often combine cereals, pulses, vegetables, dairy and added fats. The glucose response depends on the whole meal and portion, not whether one food is labelled good or bad. Record the meal, test timing and medicines if a clinician has asked for post-meal monitoring.

## When to contact a doctor
Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, breathing difficulty or persistent vomiting. Follow the personal low-glucose plan if one has been provided. Do not change insulin or other diabetes medicine from an isolated reading.

## FAQs
### Is postprandial glucose the same as an OGTT?
No. An oral glucose tolerance test uses a standard glucose drink and defined laboratory timing.

### Does one high reading mean diabetes?
No. Diagnosis requires an appropriate laboratory test and clinical interpretation.

### Can exercise after a meal affect the reading?
Yes. Activity can change glucose use, so context and timing matter.
