# Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): What to Expect An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) measures blood glucose before and after a person drinks a standard glucose solution. It can be used to diagnose diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance and is also used in gestational-diabetes testing with protocol-specific thresholds. ## In simple terms The test usually requires preparation and fasting, a baseline blood sample, the glucose drink and one or more timed samples. The amount of glucose, sampling schedule and diagnostic thresholds depend on the reason for testing. Do not compare a pregnancy OGTT with a non-pregnancy result or substitute a home glucose-meter reading for a laboratory diagnostic test. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health An OGTT shows how the body handles a defined glucose load. It provides different information from [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c), fasting plasma glucose or CGM. Current medicines and acute illness can affect planning or interpretation. ## India-specific context Follow the laboratory and clinician's exact instructions. Indian pregnancy screening pathways may use protocols that differ from non-pregnancy testing or overseas practice, so the report must be interpreted against the correct standard. ## When to speak with a doctor Tell the clinician about pregnancy, vomiting, recent illness and glucose-lowering medicines before testing. If you feel faint, severely unwell or cannot keep the drink down, alert staff rather than completing the test unsupervised. ## FAQs ### Is an OGTT the same as fasting glucose? No. It includes glucose measurements after a standard drink. ### Can HbA1c replace an OGTT in pregnancy? Not always. Pregnancy screening commonly uses a glucose challenge or OGTT. ### Can I eat during the test? Follow the laboratory's instructions; eating can invalidate a fasting protocol. ## Related glossary terms - [Fasting plasma glucose](/glossary/fasting-plasma-glucose) - [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c) - [Continuous glucose monitoring](/glossary/continuous-glucose-monitoring-cgm) - [Gestational diabetes](/glossary#gestational-diabetes) - [Insulin](/glossary/insulin) ## References - [NIDDK: Diabetes and prediabetes tests](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/professionals/clinical-tools-patient-management/diabetes/diabetes-prediabetes) - [NIDDK: A1C and pregnancy](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diagnostic-tests/a1c-test) *Educational information only.
