# Obesity: Meaning, Indian BMI Context and Health Relevance Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease involving excess or abnormal body-fat accumulation that can impair health. BMI is a practical screening measure, not a direct measure of body fat. Health assessment also considers waist size, metabolic risk, medical history, physical function and the person's circumstances. ## In simple terms Obesity is influenced by biology, genetics, medicines, sleep, mental health, food environments, activity, life stage and social factors.
