# Microvascular Complications of Diabetes: Eyes, Kidneys and Nerves Microvascular complications are long-term problems involving small blood vessels, especially diabetic retinopathy in the eyes, diabetic kidney disease and diabetic neuropathy. They can develop gradually and may be present before noticeable symptoms. ## In simple terms Persistently high glucose can damage small vessels and nearby tissues over time. Blood pressure, smoking, lipids, diabetes duration and other factors also affect risk. Screening is important because early eye or kidney changes may be silent. This term describes a group of complications. It is not a single diagnosis or test result. ## Why it matters during GLP-1 care Improving glucose management can reduce complication risk, but a GLP-1 medicine does not replace retinal examination, urine albumin testing, eGFR assessment or foot and nerve checks.
