# Macrovascular Complications of Diabetes: Heart, Brain and Limbs Macrovascular complications are problems involving larger arteries, particularly coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease. Diabetes can accelerate blood-vessel damage, but glucose is only one part of cardiovascular risk. ## In simple terms High blood glucose can damage vessels over time. High blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, smoking, kidney disease, age and family history also influence risk. These complications differ from small-vessel eye, kidney and nerve problems, although a person can have both.
