# Liver Function Test (LFT): What the Blood Tests Mean

A liver function test, often called an LFT or liver panel, is a group of blood tests that measures substances such as ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, albumin and total protein. Some results reflect liver-cell or bile-duct injury, while others provide information about liver function. The panel does not diagnose a specific disease by itself.

## In simple terms
The name can be misleading because not every component directly measures how well the liver functions. ALT and AST may rise with cell injury; ALP and GGT can help assess bile-duct patterns; bilirubin and albumin add other information. Results must be read together with symptoms, medicines, alcohol use, infections, metabolic risk and the laboratory range.

An isolated abnormal value can have causes outside the liver. Clinicians may repeat tests or order imaging and other blood tests to identify the pattern and cause.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
An LFT may be part of metabolic assessment when [obesity](/glossary/obesity), diabetes or fatty-liver disease is a concern. It may also help evaluate symptoms associated with [gallstones](/glossary/gallstones). It is not a routine measure of whether a [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist) is producing weight loss.

## India-specific context
Laboratory names, included components and reference ranges can differ. Use the ranges printed by that laboratory and follow the ordering clinician's preparation instructions. Do not compare a single number across laboratories without checking method and units.

## When to speak with a doctor
Seek urgent medical care for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, marked swelling or other serious symptoms. Do not stop a prescribed medicine solely because one value is outside the printed range; contact the clinician for interpretation.

## FAQs
### Does a normal LFT rule out every liver problem?
No. Some liver conditions can be present with normal or near-normal values, and the panel does not assess every liver disease.

### Does a high ALT always mean fatty liver?
No. ALT can rise for several reasons, including medicines, infection, alcohol-related injury and other conditions.

### Do I need to fast before an LFT?
It depends on the tests ordered and the laboratory protocol. Follow the instructions provided for that blood draw.
