# Kidney Injury and GLP-1 Treatment: Dehydration Risk and Warning Signs Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a rapid decline in kidney function over hours or days. It is different from chronic kidney disease, which is usually longer-lasting. Causes include reduced blood flow, severe dehydration, infection, blockage and medicines or toxins. ## In simple terms Kidneys need adequate circulation to filter blood and maintain fluid and mineral balance. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can reduce body fluid and blood flow. A creatinine rise or eGFR fall may signal a problem, but diagnosis needs clinical assessment and repeat context. Kidney injury is not an expected measure of GLP-1 effectiveness. ## Why it matters during GLP-1 care Some GLP-1 product information warns about AKI due to volume depletion associated with gastrointestinal reactions. The concern is often dehydration from persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea rather than direct kidney toxicity. Risk can be higher with existing kidney disease, older age, infection or other medicines affecting fluid balance. ## India context Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, diuretics, blood-pressure medicines, SGLT2 inhibitors and recent illness. Do not follow generic advice to drink excessive fluid if a clinician has prescribed a fluid restriction. ## When to contact a doctor Contact a clinician promptly for persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to keep fluids down, dizziness, much less urine or worsening weakness.
