# Kidney Function Test (KFT): What the Results Mean

Kidney function test (KFT) is a general label for tests used to assess the kidneys. A blood panel may include creatinine and an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); urine albumin testing provides different, complementary information.

## In simple terms
Creatinine is a waste product measured in blood. Laboratories use it with factors such as age and sex to estimate eGFR, which describes filtering function. A single result can be influenced by hydration, acute illness, muscle mass, medicines and laboratory variation.

A KFT is not one universal test package. Ask which measurements were included and compare trends using the laboratory's reference information.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
Kidney health matters in diabetes and when choosing or monitoring medicines. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can cause [dehydration](/glossary/dehydration), which may worsen kidney function. The exact product information and clinical circumstances determine whether kidney results affect GLP-1 prescribing or monitoring.

## India-specific context
Indian laboratories may report creatinine in mg/dL and eGFR in mL/min/1.73 m². Interpretation should include urine albumin, blood pressure, diabetes history and previous results when relevant—not just whether one value is marked high or low.

## When to speak with a doctor
Seek prompt care for very low urine output, severe dehydration, swelling with breathlessness, confusion, persistent vomiting or rapidly worsening illness. Do not stop or alter medicines based only on an online interpretation of a result.

## FAQs
### Is KFT one single test?
No. The label may cover several blood tests, and urine testing may also be needed.

### Are creatinine and eGFR the same?
No. Creatinine is measured; eGFR is an estimate calculated from creatinine and other factors.

### Can dehydration change kidney results?
Yes. Acute dehydration can affect creatinine and kidney function, especially in someone already at risk.
