# Insulin and Blood Glucose: What It Does Insulin is a hormone made by pancreatic beta cells that helps glucose move from the blood into cells for energy and storage. Insulin is also a prescription medicine essential for type 1 diabetes and used by some people with other forms of diabetes. ## In simple terms After blood glucose rises, beta cells normally release insulin. Insulin helps muscle, fat and liver cells handle glucose and reduces glucose production by the liver. In diabetes, the body may make too little insulin or respond to it less effectively. Injected insulin replaces or supplements the body's insulin. It is not the same as a [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist), and the two cannot be substituted without clinical direction. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health GLP-1 medicines promote glucose-dependent insulin release. When a GLP-1 medicine is combined with insulin or certain other glucose-lowering medicines, the treatment plan may need review because [hypoglycaemia](/glossary/hypoglycaemia) risk can change. ## India-specific context Use the exact prescribed insulin type, concentration, device and storage instructions. Access and brand names vary. Never buy or substitute an unverified product because packaging looks similar. ## When to speak with a doctor Do not stop insulin or alter doses without the diabetes team. Sweating, shaking, confusion, seizure or collapse may indicate severe low glucose. High glucose with ketones, repeated vomiting, deep breathing or drowsiness is an emergency. ## FAQs ### Is insulin only for type 1 diabetes? No. It is essential in type 1 diabetes and may also be prescribed in type 2 or gestational diabetes and other situations. ### Is a GLP-1 medicine a form of insulin? No. They are different medicines with different actions. ### Can insulin be stopped after starting GLP-1 treatment? Only the treating clinician should decide this. ## Related glossary terms - [Pancreatic beta cell](/glossary#pancreatic-beta-cell) - [Insulin secretion](/glossary#insulin-secretion) - [Insulin sensitivity](/glossary#insulin-sensitivity) - [Hypoglycaemia](/glossary/hypoglycaemia) - [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c) ## References - [NIDDK: What is diabetes?](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/what-is-diabetes) - [NIDDK: Pancreatic hormones and diabetes medicines](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/news/archive/2021/story-discovery-medications-diabetes-obesity-emerged-research-pancreatic-hormone) *Educational information only.
