# HbA1c: Test Meaning and Diabetes Context

HbA1c, also called A1C or glycated haemoglobin, is a blood test that estimates average glucose exposure over roughly the previous two to three months. It is used to help diagnose and monitor diabetes, but individual results need clinical interpretation.

## In simple terms
Glucose attaches to haemoglobin in red blood cells. Because red blood cells circulate for weeks, HbA1c reflects a longer period than a single [fasting plasma glucose](/glossary/fasting-plasma-glucose) result. It does not show every high or low reading and may miss day-to-day variation.

Anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease and some haemoglobin variants can affect accuracy. A clinician may use another glucose test when HbA1c is unreliable.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
HbA1c can help assess longer-term glucose control before and during treatment. Goals are individual; the number alone does not determine which medicine is appropriate. People taking insulin or certain other medicines still need to recognise [hypoglycaemia](/glossary/hypoglycaemia), even if the HbA1c appears within target.

## India-specific context
Indian laboratories commonly report HbA1c as a percentage and may also provide mmol/mol. Use an accredited laboratory and tell the clinician about anaemia, haemoglobin disorders, pregnancy, kidney disease, recent bleeding or transfusion.

## When to speak with a doctor
Seek urgent care for confusion, collapse, seizure, severe dehydration, breathing difficulty or other symptoms of a glucose emergency. Do not change medicine from a single laboratory result without clinical review.

## FAQs
### Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
Usually no, but follow any instructions given when other tests are ordered at the same time.

### Is HbA1c the same as fasting glucose?
No. HbA1c reflects longer-term exposure; fasting glucose is a measurement at one point in time.

### Can HbA1c ever be misleading?
Yes. Conditions affecting red blood cells or haemoglobin, and some kidney or liver conditions, can affect the result.
