# HbA1c: Test Meaning and Diabetes Context HbA1c, also called A1C or glycated haemoglobin, is a blood test that estimates average glucose exposure over roughly the previous two to three months. It is used to help diagnose and monitor diabetes, but individual results need clinical interpretation. ## In simple terms Glucose attaches to haemoglobin in red blood cells. Because red blood cells circulate for weeks, HbA1c reflects a longer period than a single [fasting plasma glucose](/glossary/fasting-plasma-glucose) result. It does not show every high or low reading and may miss day-to-day variation. Anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease and some haemoglobin variants can affect accuracy.
