# GIP: Meaning and Role in Metabolic Health

GIP stands for glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. It is an incretin hormone released by the gut after food intake and helps the pancreas release insulin when glucose is present. It is related to, but different from, [GLP-1](/what-is-glp-1-and-how-does-it-work).

## In simple terms
GIP was historically called gastric inhibitory polypeptide. The current name reflects its better-established role in glucose-dependent insulin release. Together, GIP and GLP-1 contribute to the incretin effect—the stronger insulin response generally seen after oral glucose than after an equivalent intravenous glucose exposure.

A medicine may act only at the GLP-1 receptor or at more than one receptor. A dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist is therefore not the same as every [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist).

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
GIP is part of the biology behind some newer metabolic medicines. Effects, indications, dosing and warnings depend on the exact product; the presence of GIP activity does not establish that a medicine is suitable for a particular person.

## India-specific context
Check the exact molecule and approved indication in current Indian product information and [CDSCO](/glossary/cdsco) records. An overseas approval or informal label such as ‘dual agonist’ does not prove Indian authorisation for diabetes or weight management.

## When to speak with a doctor
Do not start, share, stop or switch an incretin-based medicine without a qualified prescriber. Persistent vomiting, inability to drink, severe abdominal pain, fainting or repeated low-glucose symptoms need prompt medical advice.

## FAQs
### Is GIP the same as GLP-1?
No. Both are incretin hormones, but they act through different receptors and have distinct physiological effects.

### Is every GLP-1 medicine also a GIP medicine?
No. Some medicines act only at the GLP-1 receptor; others are designed to act at more than one receptor.

### Does GIP itself prove weight-loss benefit?
No. Benefits and risks must be established for the exact medicine, dose, population and approved use.
