# Gastroparesis: Symptoms and GLP-1 Safety Context

Gastroparesis is a disorder in which the stomach empties food slowly or stops moving it onward even though there is no mechanical blockage. Diagnosis requires compatible symptoms, medical evaluation and an appropriate gastric-emptying test.

## In simple terms
Symptoms may include feeling full soon after starting a meal, fullness long after eating, nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, upper-abdominal pain, heartburn and poor appetite. Diabetes is a common known cause, but other causes exist and sometimes none is identified.

[Delayed gastric emptying](/glossary/delayed-gastric-emptying) can describe a test finding or drug effect. It should not automatically be labelled gastroparesis without the full diagnostic context.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
GLP-1 and dual GIP/GLP-1 medicines can delay gastric emptying and may worsen digestive symptoms in some people. The exact product information and the person's history matter. Do not start, stop or restart treatment solely from an online description.

## India-specific context
Tell the prescribing clinician about prior gastroparesis, longstanding vomiting, major digestive disease and upcoming procedures. Access to gastric-emptying testing varies, so referral may be needed.

## When to speak with a doctor
Seek urgent help for severe or unrelenting abdominal pain, vomiting lasting more than an hour, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, fever, fainting, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness or signs of dehydration. Continuing vomiting or poor intake also needs prompt review.

## FAQs
### Is gastroparesis the same as indigestion?
No. Symptoms can overlap, but gastroparesis is a specific motility disorder requiring evaluation.

### Can symptoms alone diagnose it?
No. Clinicians also exclude blockage and may measure gastric emptying.

### Can diabetes cause gastroparesis?
Yes. Diabetes is a common known cause, although most people with diabetes do not have diagnosed gastroparesis.
