# Fasting Plasma Glucose: Test Meaning and Diabetes Context Fasting plasma glucose is a laboratory measurement of glucose in the plasma after a defined period without caloric intake, usually at least eight hours. It is used in diabetes screening, diagnosis and monitoring, but one result must be interpreted with symptoms, repeat testing and other clinical information. ## In simple terms The test uses plasma from a blood sample. It is different from a casual finger-prick reading, although glucose meters may be useful for self-monitoring when prescribed. Food, illness, stress, medicines, fasting duration and laboratory method can affect results. WHO diagnostic material uses a fasting plasma glucose value of 7.0 mmol/L, or 126 mg/dL, or above as one criterion for diabetes. Diagnosis generally requires appropriate confirmation when there is no unequivocal hyperglycaemia, and lower abnormal values may be classified differently across guidelines. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health Fasting glucose may be reviewed before and during metabolic treatment. It complements HbA1c and sometimes post-meal or glucose-tolerance testing. A [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist) can improve glucose control for an approved indication, but treatment decisions should not be made from one fasting result. People using other glucose-lowering medicines also need a plan for [hypoglycaemia](/glossary/hypoglycaemia). ## India-specific context Indian laboratories commonly report glucose in mg/dL. Follow the laboratory's fasting instructions and tell the clinician about medicines and acute illness. Do not compare plasma laboratory results and home-meter readings as though the methods are identical. ## When to speak with a doctor Seek urgent medical help for severe confusion, collapse, seizure, breathing difficulty or symptoms of a hyperglycaemic emergency. Repeated low or high readings, unexpected symptoms or a new abnormal laboratory result need clinician review rather than self-adjustment of medicine. ## FAQs ### How long should I fast before a fasting glucose test? Usually at least eight hours without caloric intake, but follow the laboratory or clinician's exact instructions. ### Does one high fasting result diagnose diabetes? Not always. Confirmation and interpretation depend on symptoms, the degree of elevation and other clinical information. ### Is fasting glucose the same as HbA1c? No. Fasting glucose is a value at one point in time; HbA1c reflects average glucose exposure over a longer period. ## Related glossary terms - [Hypoglycaemia](/glossary/hypoglycaemia) - [Central obesity](/glossary/central-obesity) - [Lipid profile](/glossary/lipid-profile) - [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist) ## References - [WHO South-East Asia: Criteria for diagnosis of diabetes](https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/cardiovascular-diseases/booklet-know-your-cardiovascular-disease-risk-take-action.pdf) - [NIDDK: Insulin, medicines and other diabetes treatments](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/insulin-medicines-treatments) - [NIDDK: Low blood glucose](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/preventing-problems/low-blood-glucose-hypoglycemia) *Educational information only.
