# Kidney eGFR Test: What the Result Means Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated estimate of how well the kidneys filter blood. Adult equations commonly use [serum creatinine](/glossary/serum-creatinine), age and sex. It is an estimate rather than a direct measurement. ## In simple terms Laboratories usually report eGFR alongside creatinine. A lower result can suggest reduced kidney filtration, but interpretation depends on trends, urine albumin, health history, medicines and whether the change is acute or persistent. One abnormal value does not by itself establish chronic kidney disease. Muscle mass, acute illness and dehydration can affect creatinine-based estimates. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health Kidney context can matter before and during metabolic treatment. Vomiting or diarrhoea can cause [dehydration](/glossary/dehydration), which may worsen kidney function. eGFR is not a direct measure of whether a GLP-1 medicine is working. ## India-specific context Use the laboratory's units and reference information and discuss the result with the treating clinician. Testing frequency and medicine decisions depend on the person, not a universal online threshold. ## When to speak with a doctor Seek prompt care for very low urine output, severe swelling, breathlessness, confusion, persistent vomiting or marked dehydration. Do not stop prescribed medicine or increase fluids against medical advice solely from one result. ## FAQs ### Is eGFR measured directly? Usually no. It is calculated from blood-test and demographic information. ### Does one low eGFR mean chronic kidney disease? Not necessarily. Persistence, other tests and clinical context matter. ### Why check urine albumin too? It can show kidney damage that eGFR alone may not identify. ## Related glossary terms - [Serum creatinine](/glossary/serum-creatinine) - [Kidney function test](/glossary/kidney-function-test-kft) - [Albuminuria](/glossary#albuminuria) - [Dehydration](/glossary/dehydration) - [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c) ## References - [NIDDK: Chronic kidney disease tests](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/kidney-disease/chronic-kidney-disease-ckd/tests-diagnosis) - [NIDDK: eGFR equations for adults](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/research-funding/research-programs/kidney-clinical-research-epidemiology/laboratory/glomerular-filtration-rate-equations/adults) *Educational information only.
