# Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM): Meaning and Uses Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) uses a sensor, usually worn under the skin, to estimate glucose in the fluid between cells every few minutes. It shows current estimates, trends and alerts, but it does not directly measure blood glucose in the same way as a laboratory or finger-stick test. ## In simple terms A sensor sends readings to a phone, receiver or compatible pump. Because CGM measures interstitial fluid, readings can lag behind blood glucose when levels change quickly. Devices differ in wear time, calibration, alarms and approved uses. CGM can show patterns hidden by [HbA1c](/glossary/hba1c), including overnight changes and glycaemic variability.
