# Central Obesity: Meaning, Waist Measurement and Health Risk Central obesity means excess fat is concentrated around the abdomen. It is commonly screened with waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio and is associated with higher cardiometabolic risk. It is related to, but not the same as, a diagnosis of [obesity](/glossary/obesity) based on BMI. ## In simple terms Body-fat location matters. Fat around internal abdominal organs is often called visceral fat, while fat beneath the skin is subcutaneous fat. A tape measure cannot separate these compartments, but waist measurements can provide a practical risk signal. Waist circumference should be measured with a standard method.
