# Central Obesity: Meaning, Waist Measurement and Health Risk Central obesity means excess fat is concentrated around the abdomen. It is commonly screened with waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio and is associated with higher cardiometabolic risk. It is related to, but not the same as, a diagnosis of [obesity](/glossary/obesity) based on BMI. ## In simple terms Body-fat location matters. Fat around internal abdominal organs is often called visceral fat, while fat beneath the skin is subcutaneous fat. A tape measure cannot separate these compartments, but waist measurements can provide a practical risk signal. Waist circumference should be measured with a standard method. Values can vary with tape position, clothing, breathing and posture, so trends are most useful when the same method is repeated. ## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health Central obesity often occurs alongside insulin resistance, raised blood pressure, abnormal [lipid profile](/glossary/lipid-profile) results and higher glucose. It can therefore be part of a broader metabolic assessment that includes [fasting plasma glucose](/glossary/fasting-plasma-glucose), not a stand-alone test of GLP-1 treatment eligibility. ## India-specific context South Asian populations can develop cardiometabolic risk at lower BMI and waist measurements than some other populations. Indian guidance may use sex-specific waist thresholds, but cut-offs vary by guideline and clinical purpose. The report or article should name its source rather than presenting one threshold as universal. ## When to speak with a doctor A waist measurement cannot diagnose diabetes, fatty liver disease or cardiovascular disease.
