# CDSCO: Role in Medicine Approval and Safety in India

CDSCO is India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Along with state regulators, it administers important parts of the national framework for clinical trials, new-drug permissions, imports, quality oversight and medicine safety.

## In simple terms
A medicine is not approved merely because a study has begun, a company has applied, or the product is sold in another country. Indian regulatory status depends on the relevant permission, product, formulation, strength, manufacturer and authorised indication.

CDSCO publishes rules, notices and approval information. State licensing authorities also have responsibilities for manufacture, sale and distribution, so the phrase ‘CDSCO approved’ should not be used as a vague marketing badge.

## Why this matters for GLP-1 and metabolic health
For a [GLP-1 receptor agonist](/glossary/glp-1-receptor-agonist) or another [obesity management medication](/glossary/obesity-management-medication), regulatory status should be checked for the exact product and use being discussed. A diabetes indication does not automatically create a weight-management indication.

## India-specific context
Use the current CDSCO website, official product information and an authorised prescriber or pharmacist when checking status. A clinical-trial approval, import permission, overseas label or media report is not by itself proof that a product is authorised for routine marketing for a particular indication in India.

## When to speak with a doctor
Do not self-medicate based on an approval claim in an advertisement. Report suspected counterfeit or poor-quality medicines through appropriate official and healthcare channels, keep the package and invoice when safe to do so, and seek medical help for any serious reaction.

## FAQs
### Does CDSCO approval in a clinical trial mean the medicine is approved for sale?
No. Permission to conduct a clinical trial and permission to market a product are different regulatory steps.

### Does approval abroad mean approval in India?
No. Indian authorisation must be established from Indian regulatory records and product information.

### Is every product with the same generic name identical?
No. Formulation, strength, device, manufacturer, quality requirements and approved indication can differ.
