# Body Composition During Weight Loss: Fat, Lean Mass and Water Body composition describes the components that make up body weight, commonly including fat mass, lean soft tissue, bone mineral and body water. It is different from body weight, which combines all of these into one number. ## In simple terms Two people at the same weight can have different proportions of fat, muscle, bone and water. Body composition also changes with hydration, meals, exercise, illness and the measurement method. Lean body mass is not identical to muscle. It includes water, organs, bone-related components and other non-fat tissue. A device estimate should therefore be treated as an estimate, not a precise inventory of muscle. ## Why it matters during GLP-1 care Weight loss can include both fat and lean tissue. Adequate nutrition and appropriate resistance activity can support strength and function during treatment. Body-composition trends may add context, but they do not replace symptoms, strength, dietary assessment or clinical monitoring. ## India context Choose a repeatable method and similar conditions if tracking a trend. Consumer bioelectrical-impedance devices are hydration-sensitive. DEXA can provide a more detailed estimate but still has method-specific assumptions and is not necessary for everyone. ## When to contact a doctor Discuss rapid loss, marked weakness, repeated falls, inability to meet nutrition needs or swelling with a clinician. People with implanted electronic devices should follow the device manufacturer's advice before bioelectrical-impedance testing. ## FAQs ### Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass? No. Lean body mass includes muscle plus water, organs and other non-fat tissue. ### Can a smart scale measure body fat exactly? No. It estimates composition using an algorithm and is sensitive to hydration and other conditions. ### Is BMI a body-composition test?
