# Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA): What the Results Mean

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimates body composition by passing a very small electrical current through the body and measuring impedance. Device equations combine this measurement with information such as height, weight, age and sex to estimate total body water, fat-free mass and fat mass.

## In simple terms
Current travels more readily through water-rich tissue than through fat. The machine does not directly count muscle or fat cells. Its estimates depend on assumptions about body water and on the device's electrodes and prediction equation.

Hydration, a recent meal, alcohol, exercise, skin temperature, body position, oedema and time of day can change a result. Different machines may therefore give different numbers even on the same day.

## Why it matters during GLP-1 care
BIA can help follow a broad trend during weight management when the same device and similar measurement conditions are used. A short-term change in estimated lean mass may mainly reflect water. Treatment decisions should also consider strength, physical function, nutrition, symptoms and other clinical measures.

## India context
Ask the centre which device and protocol it uses. If tracking over time, repeat under similar conditions and do not compare a gym scale directly with a clinic device. BIA is optional for many people and should not become a barrier to care.

## When to contact a doctor
Follow the device manufacturer's precautions if you have a pacemaker, implantable defibrillator or another electronic implant. Defer measurement and seek clinical advice when significant dehydration, oedema or acute illness could make interpretation unreliable. Report marked weakness, repeated falls or rapid unexplained weight change.

## FAQs
### Does BIA directly measure muscle?
No. It estimates fat-free mass and related compartments from impedance and an equation.

### Why did my result change overnight?
Water balance, meals, exercise and measurement conditions can shift the estimate.

### Is BIA the same as DEXA?
No. They use different technologies and should not be treated as interchangeable.
